You are invited to a 100th anniversary commemoration of The Great War (1914-1918) and the sacrifices of the Serbian people. This small nation was forced to fight against three empires during 1914-1918 during which some 1,000,000 Serbs died. This is considered and accepted as the highest losses on a per capita basis and only exceeded in absolute numbers by France, Russia, Germany, and Austro-Hungary.
The British Empire with some 440 million people in 1914-1918 lost about as many people as the Serbian nation which numbered less than 5 million. The nation, with even greater losses in WWII, has never truly recovered demographically to this day.
There will be a special display of photos from World War I which have been carefully chosen for their significance from several sources including Valjevo National Museum. The evening will feature two guest speakers who will highlight some of their heartfelt thoughts in commemoration. Mr. James Bissett (Canadian ex-Ambassador to Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, and Albania) and Scott Taylor (founder of Esprit de Corp military magazine).
